Arthur continues to impress with his dedication to learning. Since coming home, he’s taken up new sports, created a band, and written original songs. I believe Surf Term and Powder Term gave him the confidence to explore his passions and trust his ability to try new things.”

What interested me specifically about Surf Term was was being able to develop my physical mastery through the rigor of daily surfing. I believe that surfing is a very physically exhausting but also rewarding sport, so being able to practice that every day and develop mastery was a really exciting opportunity and I recognized it as a fantastic opportunity to grow my physical and mental health.”

After Surf Term, Jane is far more independent, has a bigger world view, and doesn’t sweat the small stuff. For example, there was some middle school friend drama when she returned and she didn’t get involved because she just didn’t see the point. She knew it would shake out whether she got invested or not.”
My favorite part of Discover Term is the no phone policy. Everybody at first thinks “Oh no, I can’t have my phone.” But once you’re there, it forces you to have a connection with people and actually be present in the moment. Throughout the trip, we are doing so much work and fun stuff that we didn’t even think about our phones. For me, at the end of the trip, I wanted to throw my phone in a ditch because I was having so much fun.”

The surf Term experience is just really stepping into the unknown of uncharted territory and just really finding ways to enjoy yourself and become more independent as a person.”

Cleaning up the beaches has had a major impact on me. I’ve also done that at my school where I’ve made my own club and we do surfing and beach clean ups. It’s taught me so much! In order to have the happiness from surfing, we need to keep our beaches clean.”

I chose to come to Surf Term to challenge myself, test my limits and see how far I could go with myself if I put my mind to something and committed. I feel like I struggled with that and now that I know I can do that and come here and do something that’s really hard, I have a lot more confidence about this kind of stuff.”

Discover Term teaches skiing and surfing, yes, but more importantly, it teaches independence, vulnerability, responsibility, and leadership. It shows kids how to be effective leaders, manage their time (and be on time), and be a good friend. It was a unique bonding experience away from so many of the distractions middle school kids face.”
The program continues to support his development as a surfer, while more importantly nurturing his self-confidence, fostering positive leadership skills, encouraging independence, and helping him grow into a thoughtful, contributing member of this beautiful world.”
Do it! Discover Term is a transformative experience at a time in their life when they need it most. Your child will come back a better, more evolved, more confident version of themselves.”
It’s tough to describe all of the different ways Surf Term made an impact on my child. She came home so happy, confident, excited, and with a greater perspective and vision for the type of life she would like to pursue.”

I know that what Davis and Ainsley experienced at Surf Term will continue to shape them for years. We already see growth and confidence and a light that shines brighter in them. They have broadened their outlook and changed some priorities and are discussing what they want to spend time and energy on intentionally.”

Matthew realized post Surf Term how distracting his phone really is! He asked us to take his phone away so that he could read or do homework without interruptions. He might not realize it now but, NO cell phone for 5 weeks was the BEST GIFT we ever gave Matthew!”
